NAFDAC DG denies N700m corruption allegation
The
Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drugs
Administration and Control, Dr. Paul Orhii, has denied any involvement
in the N700m corruption allegation traced to one of the bank accounts of
his former Special Assistant, Mrs. Aishat Okpa-Iwenofu.
Orhii stated this during a press conference organised by the agency on Tuesday.
According to him, an online report had
accused him of having an affair with his former aide. It also claimed
that Orhii had assisted her in stealing the agency’s funds.
Orhii said that the reports were
released by mischievous drug counterfeiters and disgruntled elements to
paint him black, having failed in their assassination attempt against
him.
“At first, it was an assassination attempt on me in 2010. They tried killing me by shooting at me but they failed.
“They later circulated misleading papers in Benue, accusing me of having an affair with Okpa-Iwenofu but I ignored them.
“The evil went as far as giving the
papers to the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, and the
Permanent Secretary in Abuja, simply because they are frustrated and
don’t want me to be re-appointed as NAFDAC DG.”
The NAFDAC boss who reiterated his
vision for the agency added, “I cannot relent in my efforts in
safeguarding the health of about 167 million Nigerians and other
nationals, here by getting rid of these drug traffickers.”
